Other people will come along and tell you what I missed. Whatever the discussion on this, Meld and the timers added another factor to the game to consider and plan for. At the time of the release, a lot was talked about the timer was an attempt to get more tension into the game after people were saying an over-cautious approach was making the game too slow or dull. In an interesting twist, they added a timer to the canisters, let the timer run down and the meld was lost. In game Meld was introduced directly onto maps, showing up as canisters that you had to move a troop up to which allowed you to click on it and collect the meld. Meld essentially allowed you to buy the MECs and Genemods. To go along with the new MECs and Genemods, the game introduced a new resource called "Meld". All good but not as great a change as MECs, though somebody who played with them more may disagree with me. The genetic modifications (Genemods), added buffs and extra abilities to your troops. So if Enemy Unknown was getting stale this would greatly enhance replay value. The Mechanized suits (MECs), have the ability to change the way you play dramatically. The biggest change to XCom were the ability to put your troops in Mechanized Suits and to genetically modify troops to give them extra abilities.

I thought they were good additions.Ī number of new pieces of equipment were introduced to XCom's arsenal.

They both add new dimensions to the game by bringing new ways to attack you. It also removed a couple of maps for various reasons. The two games are essentially unchanged except for a few changes:Įnemy Within added a number of new maps, at the time much was made about the maps having more elevated positions so you got more of a 3d feeling to combat. I imagine though that a lot, maybe most, people would recommend you buy it based on the added enjoyment they got from the game. The question of whether you should buy it is going to be impossible for anybody to answer except yourself.
